On March 12, 2015, Offshore Business Processing, headed by Maryann Farrugia and Tracy Farrugia, conducted an outreach program in Payatas, Quezon City, Philippines.
Payatas is a barangay (village/district) located in Quezon City, Metro Manila, Philippines. One of the largest dumpsites in the Philippines is located in this area. Thousands of families reside on the open dumpsite and the surrounding slums earning a living by picking through the garbage for reusable waste. Groups of scavengers hunt for recyclable waste that is collected and converted to cash from local junk shops.
This is an area of extreme poverty, with very little means of sanitation, food or water and many of these individuals only eat recycled garbage. Maryann, Tracy, and Kai Mijares were supported by the barangay officials in providing food and drinks to 150 local Payatas children. Many of the children appeared malnourished, and the majority were barefoot in the stifling heat. They received meals from Maryann, Tracy, and Kai, who were greeted with appreciative smiles. For them, it was chance to provide some respite from hunger and instill a sense of hope.
Tracy said, “This is the start of OBP’s outreach program. The garbage-picking communities are incredibly tenacious and resilient considering they live in the harshest of environments. We believe that we have a global responsibility to reach out to those in need, and will continue to help these communities into the future."
"At OBP we believe that we have a responsibility to raise awareness of the plight of these communities to the entire OBP team, our clients, and the world."
